Bike Co-op

Position: Bike Mechanic, Bike Co-op 

Hours: 15 hours per week (from May 1, 2024 until December 20, 2024) 

Wage: $20 per hour, plus increases and benefits per the Collective Agreement 

Reporting to: Bike Co-op Coordinator and Director of Businesses 

This position is unionized as an “A-2” (Supervisor) position with CUPE 4943.

Centre Description 

The Bike Co-op is an inclusive DIY space for beginners and experts alike with a very warm, comfortable and welcoming atmosphere, equipped with all the tools and expertise needed to repair or build a bike. 

Our coop is unique in the city for several reasons: a large workspace, its accessibility, discounts for purchases in our BABAC catalog, etc. 

We organize free workshops regularly and fun and exciting events throughout the year. 

Our main goal is to pass on our skills and knowledge to our customers and advocate a healthy and sustainable lifestyle for the planet. 

Job Description     

The Bike Co-op Mechanic offers and administers services to Bike Co-op clients. Their responsibilities include, but are not limited to: 

Responsibilities 

  • Keep up to date on developments for the cycling community;   
  • Ensure the development and promotion of the Bike Co-op, its services and programs; 
  • Work with the Bike Co-op Coordinator to facilitate bike repair workshops;  
  • Maintain an inventory of parts, equipment and tools for the Bike Co-op;  
  • Make recommendations to the Bike Co-op Coordinator as to which parts, equipment and tools should be ordered;   
  • Offer assistance to members wishing to purchase tools or a refurbished bike;  
  • Assist members with bike repairs;   
  • Assist the Bike Co-op Coordinator with their tasks;   
  • Perform various administrative tasks;   
  • Contribute to the good reputation of the UOSU; and 
  • Complete other related tasks. 
     

Qualifications 

  • Must be a student at the University of Ottawa; 
  • Bilingualism in both official languages of the University of Ottawa (French & English) is an asset; 
  • Experience with bicycles and bicycle repairs;   
  • Able to think outside of the box;   
  • Able to work under pressure;   
  • Capacity to work independently and as part of a team;  
  • Capacity to prioritise responsibilities; 
  • Demonstrate professionalism and tact;  
  • Knowledge of Microsoft platform apps (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.); 
  • Knowledge of bicycle mechanics;  
  • Experience teaching bicycle repair is an asset; and 
  • Experience in advocacy in sustainable transportation, in student government, in groups, in campaigns or in similar environment is an asset.
